Review – Scandal Season 5 Premiere

Scandal is such a ridiculous, hot mess of a show and I love it!  We come back after a super long Season 4 that was jam-packed with crazy plot lines.  It was so much that I didn’t remember much of it before reading Kara Brown’s amazing recap of the entire 4th season here.  Seriously, that was amazing!

Okay, so Season 5 picks up right where we left off with Olivia and Fitz all over each other after she showed up at the White House on the season finale.

We see them getting ready for a White House state dinner.  These scenes are cutting in and out with scenes of Sally Langston on her news show calling this state dinner a huge farce because Fitz just wants to wine and dine the royal family of Caledonia so that they will allow him to build a naval base in their country.

We see that Mellie is not invited to the event; Fitz is still pissed that she got those grand jurors killed, and he has decided he will not attend her swearing in ceremony for her new position as Senator of Virginia.  He does go in the end but serves her with divorce papers afterward.

Huck is still all jacked up after his rash of crazy killings last season, Abby is upset because literally no one is keeping her in the loop after Cyrus was fired and replaced by Elizabeth North.   Actually no one keeps Elizabeth in the loop either and she’s the Chief of Staff.  Speaking of Cyrus, where the hell is is daughter?  And where is his fake husband? Quinn is holding down the fort at OPA.
While all this is going on, the princess of Caledonia is killed in a strikingly similar manner as Princess Diana.  Her character is a hybrid of Princess Diana and Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge.  We find out that the car crash was caused on purpose because she was pregnant by her bodyguard and her marriage to the prince was all for show, on her part.  The prince was actually in love with her and we start to believe he ordered the hit but we later find out it was his mother, the queen, whom Olivia had been working for during the investigation.  This old woman is going to use diplomatic immunity to get out of it and is using Olivia’s non-disclosure agreement to force her to keep quiet.  Then, like Olivia always does, she finds a way for the woman to get her comeuppance.

After such a great win, we all knew it couldn’t just be left at that, amirite?  Now at the end of this episode, we see Sally Langston jaw jacking again on her show but this time she is on about Olivia being in the president’s bed and she actually shows photo evidence!  Dun Dun Dun!!!!!  Who took the photos?  I guess we’ll have to tune in next week.  I know I will be.

The good news is that Olivia Pope is back to working cases, but the sort of bad news is we’ll likely have a full season of her and Fitz staring at each other and mouth breathing and having crazy fights over US policy because now she feels she can butt in even more than before.  I have high hopes for this season but we shall see.
