I know, I know, everyone in the world did their Golden Girls pieces last year for the 30th anniversary of the show that had it’s first episode on September 14th, 1985. But I
was not really paying that much attention and just blogging whatever boring stuff was going on in my life off and on at the time so I did not write one. But then today I was thinking about my love for the Golden Girls and how the show is turning 31 and so am I so Ha! I feel like that’s good enough for me!
The only reason I got into the show is that when I was stationed in Nevada and working rotating shifts, the Golden Girls was my only constant. I only saw my husband for longer than a few minutes about every two months, but the Golden Girls were there every day. No matter what shift I worked, the show was on when I got home. This is thanks to the Hallmark Channel and WEtv. Oh yeah, the reruns were abundant!
After that, I was a woman obsessed! I wanted to watch it all the time, so one year I asked for some DVDs from Santa and I was nearly overcome with emotion after receiving them. That was probably also due to the preggie hormones coursing through my body at the time, but whatevs.
I can’t say that one character is better than another because they are all so different. What I can say though is when I take the quizzes, I always secretly hope to be Sophia or Blanche, but I think I’m really more of a Rose. The show was hilarious and very progressive. For a show in the mid-80’s about four older women, they sure had a lot of suitors and there was lots of innuendo and sexual freedom. Until Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, I haven’t seen anything else like it. Let’s not forget the dancing and general tomfoolery that happened on a regular basis. Oh and the fashion! Squirrel please! Here’s a lil GIF party:
The show definitely tackled some issues. Blanche’s brother’s coming out as gay which was pretty revolutionary at the time. There was the burglary episode where Rose was so affected she bought a gun and took out a parking attendant. Sophia’s male friend who had dementia, Sophia’s friend from Shady Pines who had dementia. Dorothy’s brother was a known crossdresser. I mean, I could go on and on but I won’t because I know ain’t nobody trying to be reading about my love of the Golden Girls.
Anywho, without further ado, here are some “best of” compilation videos for your viewing pleasure! Enjoy!
