This Story of the Woman who Showed Up to Her Funeral After Her Husband Tried to Have Her Killed is CRAZY!

I am obsessed with this story!  I couldn’t stop reading it when it came across my timeline this morning.  First of all, it is badass to show up at your own funeral.  Secondly, this story is just nutso.  It involves a couple who’d been together for 11 years, had three children together and met and fell in love because they were both new to Australia from Swahili-speaking countries in Africa (DROC and Burundi).  Andiamo!

As it goes, Noela Rukundo traveled from her home in Melbourne, Australia with her husband/partner (different sources are using different titles) to Burundi for a funeral for her stepmother.  Understandably after the funeral, she was feeling pretty down and decided to rest in her hotel room.  She then gets a call from the Kalala (husband dude) saying she should go outside for some fresh air.  Doesn’t sound too unreasonable right?

WRONG.  An armed man is waiting to kidnap her and take her somewhere to be killed!  WTF?  She’s then blindfolded, thrown in a car, taken on a 30-40 minute ride and then winds up in some building, hearing male voices who ask her what she did for her husband to hire them to kill her.  She thought they were lying so they called her husband and he says “Kill Her”.

Fortunately for Ms. Rukundo, the kidnappers were not completely terrible human beings and decided not to kill her because they didn’t believe in killing women and they knew her brother. They said they would let her go, tell Kalala they killed her and keep the money.  After holding her for two days, they let her go on the side of a road with a cellphone, recordings of phone calls with Kalala requesting the hit and receipts for the money he gave them for the deed.  She then made her way back to Australia with help from the Kenyan and Belgian embassies and her pastor back in Melbourne.  What a crazy few days, she is so lucky she wasn’t killed.

Upon returning, she showed up to the house she shared with Kalala at the end of her own memorial service.  He had told everyone she died in a freak accident.  Of course he was terrified and thought she was a ghost.  He then cried, apologized, and pleaded guilty.  He’ll be in jail for nine years.  (That’s IT??!?!?)

Oh yeah, and he says he was worried she would leave him for some other dude so he decided TO HAVE HER KILLED??  There’s just so much WTF in this story, I can’t even.
