I’m way late. I know this. But what’s important is that I’m here. And you’re here. Allons-y!
So DWTS Season 23 kicked off nearly one week ago today. Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews are back as hosts and *surprise* they brought back Julianne Hough as a judge alongside Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli. A few things: I’m sad to see Keo back in the troupe and that Mark Ballas isn’t on this season but he’s gonna be in Jersey Boys one of my absolute favorite musicals. I’m happy to see Allison, Cheryl and Emma back as well. How hot is the promo with Sharna and Artem tho?
Anywho, here are the contestants, what dance they did and how they did, according to me. (see what I did there?)
Marilu Henner is partnered with Derek Hough who is back after a season off. In her package she talked about being a huge fan of the show and was so happy to have Derek as her partner. They did a Jive to “Can’t Stop Dancin'” by Captain and Tenilleand Marilu is a solid dancer, she looked like she was having fun and so did he. And she’s 64? Chile, please, I don’t know how far she’ll go but she will be a fun one to watch. They received a 27/40.
James Hinchcliffe with Sharna Burgess. I live for Sharna. Her choreography is always so good and she really pushes her partners. I’m glad she got a good one this season. I was super impressed. They danced a Foxtrot to “Live Life” by Zayde Wolf. This guys is the real deal. 31/40
Calvin Johnson Jr. AKA Megatron and Lindsey Arnold were next with a Cha Cha to “That’s What I Like” by Flo Rida Ft. Fitz and he talked in his package about not being able to dance and how big he is and his size 15 feet. He did a good job with the choreography though but he’s just so much larger than Lindsey so that was a little distracting but I’m sure I’ll get used to it the longer the competition goes on. 26/40
Maureen McCormick and her partner Artem Chigvintsev danced a Viennese Waltz to “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” by Mary J. Blige. She seems like such a nice lady. She cried throughout her entire package but hopefully she’ll get used to being on the show and we’ll get to see more. The dance was okay, she got the choreography but was a little stiff. 22/40
Babyface and Allison Holker danced a Foxtrot to “Deed I Do” by Ray Charles. It was cute. Babyface talked about his mom in the package and got us all teary eyed. They did a pretty good job; it was solid. I loved the ending of their routine. 26/40
Amber Rose and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced a Foxtrot to “Here” by Alessia Cara. First of all, I ride for Amber Rose. Maks is whatevs, but he’s a good choreographer. Of all the couples they don’t seem to get along as well. I really wanted Amber to do really well but Jenna and Val did an amazing routine to this same song a season or two ago and so there was no way for Amber and Maks to do better than that. But overall she did okay and I hope she sticks around and improves! 24/40
Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson danced a Cha Cha to “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. First let me say that the producers were wrong for giving them that song for a Cha Cha. Vanilla Ice can dance! No doubt about that. The routine was like Hip Hop with a dash of Cha Cha but WHAT WERE THEY SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT??? Anywho, he did really well especially for someone who’s never seen the show and didn’t know what to expect. Maybe that’s an advantage. I’m looking forward to next week. They got 25/40 for their efforts.
Jana Kramer and her partner Gleb Savchenko danced a Viennese Waltz to “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. It was so sexy. I loved it. I thought they looked good and she did a good job dancing it. Of course Len slammed it for being too sexy but I like it. I mean the facial expression were a little tawdry but that’s okay. 27/40
Jake T. Austin and newly-minted pro Jenna Johnson danced a Jive to “Kiss You” by One Direction. In his package, Jake mentioned he and Jenna were both born in 1994. He seems to want to be seen as a mature man, but he still has some maturing to do. The dance wasn’t the best of the night, but he gave it a good go. 22/40
Rick Perry is partnered with Emma Slater did a Cha Cha to “God Blessed Texas” by Little Texas. I didn’t expect much, he messed up some steps but he tried. Poor Emma she got stuck with a stinker. And what was with the corndog thing? Is that a Texas tradition? They got the lowest score of the night. 20/40
Terra Jolé and her partner Sasha Farber Jived to “Stuff Like That There” by Kelly Clarkson. There was all this stuff about her being the first little person and all that. She did a great job with the choreography and Sasha is doing a great job with her. I can’t wait to see what they do with the dances that are more in hold. 25/40
Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke who’s back after a long hiatus did a Foxtrot to “Call Me Irresponsible” by Michael Buble. He did okay but after their performance some protesters came on the dance floor and caused a scene. Look, I don’t like that they guy got rewarded with a DWTS season after what he did, but that probably wasn’t the best place. I definitely won’t be rooting for him but meh. 24/40
Last but not least Laurie Hernandez along with my boo Val Chmerkovskiy danced a Cha Cha to “American Girl” by Bonnie McKee. Laurie is cute and such a fun person to watch. She MURDERED that routine. She looks so professional already, I can’t wait to see what she does the rest of the season. I’ll be rooting for her. 30/40
Overall it was a good premiere, about the same as the others I’ve seen. I will be tuning in tomorrow night to see what they do this week.
